Leap Wallet to Cease Operations on May 28
In a development that has sent ripples through the Cosmos ecosystem, Leap Wallet has announced that it will permanently shut down its wallet services on May 28, 2026. The announcement, made through the company official blog and social media channels on Thursday, cited unsustainable operating costs and a challenging funding environment as the primary reasons for the closure.
Leap Wallet has been one of the most widely used wallet applications in the Cosmos (ATOM) ecosystem, supporting dozens of Cosmos SDK-based blockchains including Cosmos Hub, Osmosis, Juno, Stargaze, and many others. The wallet was known for its user-friendly interface and comprehensive staking features.
What Happens to Your Funds
The critical thing for users to understand is that your funds are on the blockchain, not in the wallet software. Leap Wallet is a non-custodial wallet, meaning the company never held custody of user funds. Your tokens, staked assets, and NFTs exist on their respective blockchains and can be accessed using any compatible wallet as long as you have your seed phrase (recovery phrase).
"Your assets are safe as long as you have your seed phrase. We want to be very clear about this: we have never had access to your funds, and our shutdown does not affect the underlying blockchain assets in any way," the Leap Wallet team wrote in their announcement.
Step-by-Step Migration Guide
Users should take the following steps to ensure a smooth transition before the May 28 deadline:
- Step 1: Locate your seed phrase. Find the 12 or 24-word recovery phrase you received when you first created your Leap Wallet. This is typically stored in a secure location offline. If you cannot find your seed phrase, the wallet still allows you to export it from the settings menu while the app is operational.
- Step 2: Choose an alternative wallet. Several options exist for Cosmos ecosystem users, including Keplr Wallet, Cosmostation, and Station Wallet. Each supports the major Cosmos SDK chains.
- Step 3: Import your seed phrase. Download your chosen alternative wallet and use the "Import existing wallet" or "Recover wallet" option, entering your seed phrase. Your balances and staking positions should appear automatically.
- Step 4: Verify all chains and balances. Check that all your assets across different Cosmos chains are visible in the new wallet. Some wallets may require you to manually add certain chains.
- Step 5: Update any connected dApps. If you have active positions on DeFi protocols like Osmosis, Mars Protocol, or others, reconnect them using your new wallet.
Handling Staked Assets
Users with staked tokens do not need to unstake before migrating. Staking positions are recorded on the blockchain and will be accessible through any compatible wallet. However, users should verify that their staking rewards are being properly claimed and that validator delegations appear correctly in their new wallet.
For users who have tokens in the 21-day unbonding period on Cosmos Hub or similar unbonding periods on other chains, these will continue to unbond normally regardless of the wallet shutdown.
Why Leap Wallet Is Closing
The Leap Wallet team indicated that the decision was primarily financial. The company had raised a seed round of funding in 2023 during a period of significant growth in the Cosmos ecosystem, but subsequent market conditions and a contraction in Cosmos ecosystem activity made it difficult to raise additional funding or generate sufficient revenue to sustain operations.
"We explored every option including pivoting to new ecosystems, partnership models, and reducing our team to skeleton crew. Ultimately, we concluded that we could not continue to provide the level of service and security that our users deserve," the announcement stated.
Impact on the Cosmos Ecosystem
The closure of Leap Wallet removes one of the most user-friendly entry points to the Cosmos ecosystem. Industry observers note that wallet infrastructure is a critical component of any blockchain ecosystem and that the loss of a major wallet provider could affect user onboarding and retention.
Keplr Wallet, the remaining dominant Cosmos wallet, is expected to absorb the majority of migrating users. The Keplr team has published a dedicated migration guide for Leap Wallet users and temporarily expanded its support capacity to handle increased inquiries.
Users are strongly encouraged to complete their migration well before the May 28 deadline to avoid any last-minute issues. While the blockchain assets will remain accessible indefinitely through any compatible wallet, the Leap Wallet interface and support team will no longer be available after shutdown.
