Ethereum's Layer 2 scaling networks have collectively processed more daily transactions than the Ethereum mainnet for the first time in the blockchain's history. Data from L2Beat shows that combined throughput across Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, and zkSync exceeded 4.2 million transactions on April 13, compared to 1.1 million on the base layer.

The milestone underscores the success of Ethereum's rollup-centric scaling roadmap, which aims to move the majority of user activity to cheaper Layer 2 networks while preserving the security guarantees of the main chain. Gas fees on popular L2s have fallen below $0.01 for standard transfers, making decentralized applications accessible to a broader user base.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin described the achievement as a validation of years of research and development, adding that further improvements to data availability through upcoming protocol upgrades will continue to reduce costs.
